The Bryn Athyn Train Wreck

From Tom Lynskey: On December 5th, 1921, two trains collided head-on at full speed on the tracks in Bryn Athyn between the Southampton and Bryn Athyn train stations. The crash happened in the worst possible place, in a rock-sided curve now known as the Gulch. The narrow rocky cliffs of the rock-cut on either side trapped victims in the fiery wreckage and impeded any possible attempt of rescue. The impact forced both engines upward. One of the two locomotives landed on top of its own tender. And the second engine landed on top of the first locomotive. Fire erupted and spread to the wooden passenger cars. Most of those who perished did not die of impact but got trapped in the wreckage and burned alive. The accident was due to human error and an outdated railroad system. Nine of the victims that could not be identified by name are buried together at North and Southampton Cemetery. Tom Lynskey does an amazing job explaining what happened on that day a century ago in his video:https://youtu.be/3_TD9bgCrSo
